4 Ways to Prepare for a House Cleaning

We hear from many clients they feel compelled to clean before a house cleaning.
Well, we’re here to hopefully save you some time, while clarifying some questions.

So, do you need to “clean” before your house cleaning company or maids come in?

No. Will you still want to? Probably. We’ve found that many people want to help maids out by picking things up prior to an appointment. And, this is definitely not a bad thing! Here’s the thing, though. It’s so easy to slip into actual hands-on cleaning vs. just moving things to make it easier for cleaners to access.

Alas, here are the rules of thumb for the best way to prepare for a cleaning and what you do and do not need to worry about.

1. Move heavy objects to make room for cleaning.

If you are looking for things like appliances (fridge, oven, etc.) to be cleaned behind / underneath, you are more than welcome to slide out for the cleaner as we cannot due to liability and not wanting to hurt anything. Same goes for big furniture like sofas, heavy coffee tables, etc. This can be done before a cleaning or during a cleaning if you’re home.

2. Determine what to do about clothes, toys, & dishes.

By default, we try our best to make judgement calls about where things go. For example, if there’s a bin sitting out and you’ve asked us to put toys in it, we can easily discern. If there are a few pieces of clothes and you’ve instructed us to leave on the bed, no worries. In cases where there are large amounts of clothes, toys or just general home items, we might want to contact you and discuss the best way to remedy. By default, we do not include dishes in our cleaning. This is because we don’t want to potentially damage delicate items which could very valuable to you. If you would like dishes included and feel safe having us handle, just let us know and we can look at adding on.

3. Put away private documents.

All Sparkly house cleaners are trained to not only never read, but rarely touch any documents that look like mail or anything confidential. If you feel safer locking these items up, please do so, but also know our best practices include maintaining your privacy.

4. Make things more accessible for cleaning.

In general, anything that you’d like cleaned but is “obviously” obstructed, we’d love to have you make accessible for a cleaning. However, we also remember that it’s just house cleaning at the end of the day. So, if you’re worried about not having enough time to “ready something,” it’s all good. We can always get it next time.
